Fully illustrated with stunning photographs from the Racing Post’s archives.

More of a chronology of events than a real book on Frankel. Poor comparison with books on Secretariat, Seabiscuit and Northern Dancer.

Frankel The Wonder Horse eBook Andrew Pennington Andrew Pennington Reviews

This book provides a tribute to a magnificent racehorse, irrespective of whether or not he really is the best racehorse ever. There is enough information here to satisfy most people about Frankel, his racing career, his ancestors, the people involved in his career and the man who he is named after - Bobby Frankel, who trained Intercontinental to win a Breeders Cup race at the expense of Ouija Board. There are also plenty of photographs of Frankel, both at the races and at his Newmarket home.

Following the early chapters about people and breeding, there is a chapter for each race. Each chapter begins with the race card as originally shown in the newspaper with all the details including the betting forecasts, but omitting the form guides, and ends with the result, also as originally printed, followed by an analysis of each race in plain English. It would have been a good idea to replace the abbreviations that regular Racing Post readers know with full words. Anybody who is intimidated by the jargon can simply ignore it and use the plain English analysis.

A page near the end of the book compares Frankel with other great horses, but tends to confirm a radio discussion on the eve of Frankel's final race. Both of them proved inconclusive. One obvious problem with any debates on the best racehorse ever is that they tend to be limited to horses who raced within living memory, but even just among those, it is clear that unanimity is impossible. To my mind, Henry Cecil took a cautious approach with Frankel, starting his career over seven furlong and never racing him over more than ten a half furlongs, with all his races being in England. It appears likely that Frankel could have won over a greater range of distances, but he didn't prove it. The suggestion is that Frankel is a quirky horse who needed very careful handling, but if he wasn`t quirky, he might have been able to prove beyond doubt that he is the best racehorse within living memory. Most of the other contenders for that title won over a wider range of distances, or a wider range of going conditions, or travelled more. So the arguments will go on about whether Frankel is the best ever or not. All that we can ever be sure of is that Frankel is a contender for that title.

The book has been compiled, using articles from the Racing Post as a basis, with updates in [] to indicate what happened after the articles were written and with some completely new text added, normally in italics apparently to make clear that it is not part of a newspaper article. It would have been more readable if the text of the original articles had been revised properly (for example to put everything in the past tense and to rearrange the text), so avoiding the need for either italics or []. Frankel is, by any standards, a five-star racehorse, but I can only give this book four stars.
Great recollection of an all time classic. To be told and read again and again years over! Excellent read from various angles.
